How to backup WhatsApp in 2020? Android & Ios

The massively famous WhatsApp is one of these applications, which could cost you years of messages if you don’t know how to backup WhatsApp.

How to backup WhatsApp

The app generates a local backup every night automatically as long as you are connected to Wi-Fi and have adequate battery and storage life. This means you can only be secured by cloud backups if your phone is lost or damaged.

In this regard, WhatsApp has an integrated feature to backup all your messages and media from Google Drive to the cloud. You can run automatically every day, week or month, with the option of manually backup whenever you like.

How to backup WhatsApp

  1. Tap the three dots in the top right, then Settings.
  2. Tap Chats, then Chat backup at the bottom.
  3. Configure your WhatsApp backup settings.

At the top of the screen, you will see when your lask WhatsApp backup was created, plus an option to back up right away. Make sure to do this on WiFi if possible, as backing up media can use up a lot of mobile data.

It should be noted that now only WhatsApp files can be backed up via Google Drive. You may not be able to create a backup from WhatsApp using the above method if your phone does not have GooglePlay Services (e.g. newer Huawei phones). In addition, WhatsApp backups are not secured by end-to-end encryption such as messages that are automatically removed after 1 year of operation from your Google Drive account.

  1. Launch WhatsApp from your Home screen or the app drawer.
  2. Tap the menu icon on the top right of the screen. It’s the three vertical dots.
  3. Tap Settings.
  4. Tap Chats.
  5. Tap Chat backup.
  6. Tap Back up to Google Drive to choose the frequency with which you’d like to backup your chats (we’re choosing Daily for this example).
  7. Tap the Google account you want to back up.
  8. Tap Allow.
  9. Tap Include videos if you want to back up videos.
  10. Tap Back up to initiate your first backup.

Restore from a Google Drive backup

In order to successfully restore a Google Drive backup, you need to use the same phone number and Google account used to create the backup.

To restore your backup:

  1. Uninstall and reinstall WhatsApp.
  2. Open WhatsApp and verify your number.
  3. When prompted, tap RESTORE to restore your chats and media from Google Drive.
  4. After the restoration process is complete, tap NEXT. Your chats will be displayed once initialization is complete.
  5. WhatsApp will begin restoring your media files after your chats are restored.

If you install WhatsApp without any prior backups from Google Drive, WhatsApp will automatically restore from your local backup file.
