PhD Applications Open: Quantitative Bioscience Munich (QBM)

Welcome to the Munich Graduate School of Biosciences. Our School aims to prepare young life scientists for the new era of system-oriented quantitative bioscience. It offers a comprehensive and innovative PhD education program with international perspectives and a range of disciplines ranging from biochemistry and pharmaceutical to bioinformatic, experimental physics and theoretical mathematics. Both research projects for students and education in the classroom are highly interdisciplinary.

The School is a joint initiative by leading scientists from Ludwig-Maximilians-University (LMU) Munich, the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry, the Helmholtz Center Munich and the Technical University Munich (TUM). QBM receives funding through the second round of the German Excellence Initiative, which is designed to promote excellence and innovation in research and education at German universities.

The Graduate School of Quantitative Biosciences Munich (QBM) is founded in 2012 as part of the German Excellence Initiative. The international PhD training program focuses on communication and collaboration between traditionally separate disciplines, ranging from biochemistry and medicine to bioinformatics, experimental and theoretical biophysics and applied mathematics. With its strong emphasis on anchoring theoretical analysis in advanced quantitative experimentation and the excellence of the participating scientists, the school has a unique position within the European scientific landscape.

The core personnel of the school are the principal investigators represented by scientific coordinators of the program, the scientific and administrative staff, and graduate students (75-100 in steady-state). In addition, an external scientific advisory board, representing the four key scientific areas (biochemistry, biophysics, bioinformatics/statistics/theoretical physics, and medicine) advises the school on organization and strategy.
