Kerala Plane Crash: 16 Deaths In Calicut After Air India Aircraft Breaks

An aircraft in the southern State of Kerala crashed with 191 on board and at least 16 people were killed, say the authorities.

Aviation from India said that the aircraft, on their way from Dubai, skipped off the road and ruptured in two at Calicut Flughafen upon arrival.

Emergency responders on the spot, emergency operations are ongoing.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that he was “pained by the plane accident”

At least 16 people died in the crash, MK Raghavan, Calicut lawmaker told the BBC.

Any of the boarders of Boeing 737 were evacuated and at least 35 wounded people were admitted to the hospital.

The airline reported that 184 passengers were on board flight IX-1344 when it crashed on Calicut, also known as Kozhikode, including ten children and seven crew members, two of whom were pilots.

During the coronavirus crisis, the flight was operated by the government to repatriate Indians.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said the plane fell into a valley and broke in two after skidding off the end of the runway. No fire was reported at the time of landing, the aviation regulator said.

Images carried by Indian media show the aircraft broken in two pieces, with people searching through the wreckage.

Having instructed NDRF [National Disaster Response Force] to reach the site as early as possible and support rescue actions, “Homeland Minister Amit Shah tweeted.” Distressed to learn about the tragic accident of Air India Express aircraft in Kozhikode, Kerala

This incident took place in the heavy rainfall in the region at about 19:00 local time (14:30 BST).

Flooding and slides also happened as India’s monsoon season rises.

Earlier on Friday, dozens of people were feared dead in Kerala’s Idukki district after monsoon-season floods triggered a landslide.

Plane crashes have happened before during India’s monsoon season, which lasts from June to September and wreaks havoc across South Asia every year.

In May 2010, 158 people died when an Air India Express flight overshot Mangalore airport runway and crashed. A similar incident happened in July 2019 in Mangalore, prompting an inquiry.
