India again crosses 1-lakh Covid cases with PM Modi pointing out the laxity of states over the supply of vaccines

India again surpassed the 1-lakh mark in Covid 19 cases on Thursday when Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Chief Ministers to address Covid 19. His meeting took place in the midst of the continuing war of words between the Center and various states over the lack of Covid vaccine provision.

As India announced over 1.3 lakh cases of Covid-19 on Thursday, the centre and the states had a tussle for sufficient vaccine supply.

While a shortage of vaccine stocks is cited by some countries, including Maharashtra, Odisha, Jharkhand, and Chhattisgarh, the Center has been criticising state governments for not having a proper approach to combat Covid 19.

In addition, many parts of Uttar Pradesh have confirmed vaccine shortages, which have led to the shut down of the Noida, Ghaziabad and Varanasi centres.

Meanwhile, on Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged chief ministers to step up efforts for the next two or three weeks to monitor the spread of the virus in warfare and suggested calling on the night curfew, which is also clamped down as a “corona curfew” to sustain public attention to the pandemic.

He also mentioned that between 11 and 14 April States should hold a ‘vaccine festival’ to inoculate the maximum number of qualified Cov-19 beneficiaries.

PM HOLDS MEET WITH CMs, POINTS OUT LAXITY

MP Modi interacted on the pandemic and ongoing push for vaccination in close contact with chief ministers. He noticed that in many jurisdictions, the administration seems lax with new peaks in everyday Covid-19 events.

In addition, between 11 and 14 April he called for a festival of vaccines (Tika Utsav).

In the context of the demand by some opposition parties to open the shot for all ages above 18, the Prime Minister also strongly defended existing eligibility requirements for vaccination.

He reiterated his call to work out the test, monitor and treat mantra, as well as the pushing Covid-approachable conduct, and Covid-management to bring the peak down.

STATES HIT BACK, SAY NO POLITICS OVER COVID FIGHT

In some cases, with the debate taking a political tone, PM Modi wryly pointed out that those who are engaged in politics in this matter can do so, but would not be joining this subject.

  • To that end, the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Uddhav Thackeray, told the Prime Minister that the state was not lagging behind in the struggle against Covid-19, urging him to state that no policy should be implemented.
  • Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain said the fight against coronavirus is not a question of the Center versus the province.
  • Punjab CEO Amarinder Singh urged the Center to provide States with the flexibility to develop their local vaccination strategies under the broad parameters of the Central Government approach.
  • Bhupesh Baghel, Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh, asked the Prime Minister to give vaccinations against the Covid 19 to all persons over the age of 18.
  • With half Odisha vaccination centres, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has called for PM Modi to stop operations for Covishield’s want, so that the state can store up to the 10 days before the inoculation process is running smoothly. In addition to the Covid-19 situation, he sought Rs 300 crore from the Centre.
