A Citizens’ Commission for the Reimaging of India’s Health System was set up by the Lancet, a Global Health Review, Lakshmi Mittal and Family South Asia Institute, and Harvard University.

This Commission will draw up a plan for the implementation of universal health coverage in India over the next two years. The government will take input from this and a more comprehensive universal health system policy could be put in place.

The Committee is led by four distinguished health and business leaders, including three speakers to CNBC-TV18 – Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, Biocon Ltd Executive Chair, Vikram Patel, Harvard Medical School Professor for global health and Vellore Professor, Gagandeep Kang.

Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw said In fact, not only in India, but around the world, the COVID pandemic has shown fragility in public health, primary health care, and our general health care systems. I think this is a very timely intervention that happens in a way that will actually change how we see a health model for a country such as India developed by The Lancet Citizens’ Commission».

“The efforts made by the present government, such as Ayushman Bharat, are just examples of various programs or missions implemented by successive governments. However, there are some significant divisions and the important thing is that our health landscape is very divided.

The COVID-19 pandemic shows two strong examples of this fragmentation, of which one is public spread privately and the second is the separation of so-called modern medicine or allopathic medical practices with Indian systems of medicine.

He pointed out One of the efforts that we need to make as a committee is to reach a consensus on how all these different players can actually put themselves together at the table and agree on their respective roles so as to achieve universal health protection.”

“The commission will focus on access and affordability so that we can promote equity in healthcare,” said Prof. Gagandeep Kang. In order to do so, we will have to analyze programs that have worked in India where we have small-scale models in which quality healthcare is offered to the public.”
