Coronavirus vaccine: Health Minister Harsh Vardhan said that Covaxin from Bharat Biotech “likely to have similar protective efficacy reported for others”

New Delhi: Health Minister Harsh Vardhan criticized Congress and other opposition leaders for their statement on Bharat Biotech Covaxin, which, along with the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine developed from the Serum Institute of India, was cleared for emergency use in the region.

Shashi Tharoor and Jairam Ramesh of Congress and Akhilesh Yadav, the leader of the Samajwadi Party, said Covaxin lacked effective data to demonstrate the effective efficacy of the vaccine before it was approved for urgent use.

“It is said that everyone is making such a big problem political. Sh @ShashiTharoor, Sh @yadavakhilesh, and Sh @Jairam Ramesh don’t try to dismiss well-designed science-based protocols followed for the approval of #COVID19 vaccines.

Health Minister said that “Covaxin likely to have similar protective efficacy reported for others” despite the absence of phase 3 efficacy evidence.

“Globally approved gene encoding-related vaccines Spike Protein Protein has a protective efficacy of more than 90%. But in addition to spike protein, Covaxin, based on the whole virus inactivated, has other antigenic epitopes.

‘Covaxin is more likely to function against new variants such as the N501Y Variant (UK Variant) and all others due to antigenic drift as it includes immunogens (epitopes) from other genes, in addition to those from the Spike protein.

“For those spreading rumors let it be known that EUA for Covaxin is differently conditional – in clinical trial mode, EUA for Covaxin is different from Covishield because its use will be in clinical trial mode. All Covaxin recipients to be tracked, monitored as if they’re in trial,” tweeted Harsh Vardhan, referring to an emergency authorization.

The regulatory body, Drugs Controller General of Indian, announced on Sunday in a press conference that both Oxford’s Covishield and Covaxin vaccines should be administered in two doses and kept at 2-8 degrees Celsius temperatures.

“We will never approve anything if there are any safety concerns. 110 percent of the vaccines are safe,” says DCGI VG Somani, adding 70.42 percent successful Covishield and ‘safe and robust immune responses’ to Covaxin.

The president of the BJP, JP Nadda, tweeted Congress, and other opposition parties are panicking people. “Congress and the Opposition is not proud of anything Indian. They should introspect about how their lies on the COVID-19 vaccine will be used by vested interest groups for their own agendas,” Nadda said.

Earlier in the day, the leaders of Congress said the government had to clarify why compulsory protocols and verification of step- 3 data were dispensed with when authorizing Covaxin to be used in an emergency.

“Covaxin has not yet conducted phase-three testing. The approval was premature and may be detrimental. @drharshvardhan should be explained. Its use should be avoided before complete tests are finished.
