Aarogya Setu has been using over 10 million downloads since its launch nine days ago and is an app developed by the Electronics and IT Ministry to help citizens identify their contract risk COVID-19 (coronavirus).
The app is both available on Google Play and Apple App Store (for iPhones). The app is available. It is available in 11 — 10 Indian and English languages.
In case of a passage of paths with someone who has tested positive, Aarogya Setu is to keep a user informed. The tracking is done via a social graph produced with Bluetooth and location, which can demonstrate your interaction with anyone with positive results.
You will need to switch Bluetooth (to keep it on at all times) and Location after the app has been installed. Set ‘Sharing location’ to ‘Always’ (it is possible to modify this at any time later).
It has an auto-testing tool. A number of questions are asked by the user. In the case of COVID symptoms, some answers will send the information to a government server. The figures help the government take timely measures and launch an isolation procedure if necessary.
If somebody you came close to, you will be alerted, unwittingly, to positive tests. The app warnings come with guidelines on how to isolate yourself and what to do in the case of symptoms.
The data is shared only with the government. The app doesn’t allow your name and number to be publicly disclosed.
The steps required to use the app are as follows:
- After you’ve run the app, allow it to access your device’s location, as prompted.
- You’ll get an OTP, enter it and you are on.
- Choose your gender from the options given.
- Enter your full name, then age, and then profession, as asked.
- You’ll be asked about your foreign travel history in the last 30 days. Give the appropriate answer. Your foreign travel history, if any, will be matched with that of those who’ve tested positive, with the help of ICMR database.
Then, the app asks you whether or not you are ready to volunteer in the times of need. Assuming you answer Yes, a 20-second assessment test starts.
After you have installed Aarogya Setu in your phone, it will detect other nearby smartphones that also have the app installed. It can then figure out the risk of infection based on sophisticated parameters if any of these contacts is tested positive.
