5 Primary Linked COVID Gene Found, Might Help In Treatment

London: Five primary genes are related to the most serious COVID-19 type, researchers said Friday that they also referred to some existing therapies that could be used to treat individuals at risk of a pandemic.

Investigators in 208 intensive care units throughout the United Kingdom who researched the DNA for 2,700 COVId-19 were shown to be central to several serious events, including five genes implicated in two molecular processes: antiviral immunity and lung inflammation.

Kenneth Baillie, an Edinburgh Critical Care Specialist and co-leading Research Assistant, reported that “Our results immediately highlight which drugs should be at the top of the list for clinical testing,”

The genes, known as IFNAR2, TYK2, OAS1, DPP9, and CCR2, partly explain why some individuals are desperately affected by Covid-19, while others are not.

The results published in the journal Nature could help scientists accelerate the search for new COVID 19 medicines by conducting clinical trials of antivirals and anti-inflammatory drugs.

One class of anti-inflammatory drugs known as JAK-inhibitors, including Eli Lilly’s arthritis drug, should be among those with the most promise.

In addition, the team of Baillie found that an improvement in INFAR2 gene activity could provide COVID-19 safety, as it can imitate the impact of interferon therapy.

Several current medicines, such as interferon-beta-1a, interleukin-1 receptor blocker, and Sanofi’s Arthritis medication Kevzara, are investigated in clinical trials for their potential against COVID-19.

So far the only medications approved around the world for treating COVID-19 patients have been a steroid known as dexamethasone and a recently formulated antiviral called reservoir from Gilead – while remdesivir is not prescribed in serious cases and has been used in a combination of trials.

Last month, for patients not admitted to a hospital but at risk of extreme disease due to their age or to other disorders, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Eli Lilly’s antibody-drug COVID-19.
