New Delhi: On Thursday, a 4.2-magnitude medium-scale earthquake outside Delhi forced residents out of their homes.
According to the Indian National Seismological Center, the epicenter of the earthquake was 48 km southwest of Gurgaon in Haryana.
At 11:46 p.m., the earthquake reached the city at a depth of 7.5 km.
For few seconds, strong tremors have been experienced in and around Delhi.
No immediate damage to life or property was confirmed.
Social media was abuzz with people reporting the quake, instantly sending #Earthquake to the top of the trends.
Geologists say that Delhi, which is along a fault line, is vulnerable to significant earthquakes. Since 12 April nearly 20 quakes have been reported in the Delhi National Capital Area (NCR).
In seismic zone IV, the town falls – a very risky area. The increasing intensity and frequency of earthquakes in India have been divided into four seismic zones—II, III, IV, and V.
Experts also said that when an earthquake occurs in Delhi in magnitude 6 a significant number of buildings that do not meet safety criteria are potentially destroyed.
