In India, applying for an online passport involves registering for the Seva portal of Passport and taking a few easy steps. The online experience is smooth, but after an appointment online you need to physically visit the Seva Kendra Passport or regional passport agency.

A dedicated online service named Passport Seva, allowing people to apply for an online passport was provided by the Ministry of External Affairs. It reduces the time at the passenger office and makes the whole process much easier.

How to Apply for a passport online in India?

It is worth noting that you will have to keep your original documents ready to bring during your visit to Seva Kendra passports or a regional passport office for your appointment before you get to begin the process of submitting your application online in India.

The list of documents needed to apply for a passport was published online. When you apply for an online passenger passport, you will be able to visit a Seva Kendra passenger passport for 90 days. There are several steps to request an online passport.

  1. Visit the Official Website of Passport Seva portal and click on the Register Now link.
  2. Enter your details accurately and based on your location select the passport office you would like to visit.
  3. Once the details are entered, you have to clear human Captcha characters and then click on the Register button.
  4. Now, login to the Passport Seva Portal with your registered login ID that you got after registering.
  5. Registered login ID is sent to you after registration via SMS/ Email.
  6. Click the Apply for Fresh Passport/ Re-issue of Passport link. It is important to note that while applying under the Fresh Issuance category, you must have never held an Indian passport in the past. Otherwise, you should apply under the Reissue category.
  7. Fill in all the required details in the form that appear on the screen and click Submit.
  8. Now click on the Pay and Schedule Appointment link on the View Saved/ Submitted Applications screen. This will let you schedule your appointment. You also need to pay a fee online for your appointment.
  9. Click on the Print Application Receipt link to print your application receipt.
  10. You will receive an SMS message with the details of your appointment.
  11. Now, you just need to visit the Passport Seva Kendra or Regional Passport Office where the appointment has been booked. Make sure to carry your original documents along with the application receipt. It’s not mandatory to carry the physical application receipt if you can show the SMS message you received on your phone after taking the appointment online.

Please note that the government has also made it mandatory for applicants visiting a passport office to follow COVID-19 protocols. Applicants are advised to wear a mask, carry a sanitiser, download and install the Aarogya Setu app, and follow social distancing norms during their visit.

Documents required for a fresh passport

  • Photo passbook of running bank account in any public sector bank, private sector bank and regional rural banks
  • A voter ID card
  • Aadhaar card
  • Electricity bill
  • Rent agreement
  • Driving license
  • PAN card
  • Landline or postpaid mobile bill
  • Proof of gas connection
  • Spouse’s passport copy (First and last page of the passport that includes the details of the family and mentions applicants name as the spouse of the passport holder)
  • Certificate from Employer of reputed companies on letterhead.
  • Income Tax assessment order
  • School leaving certificate
  • Birth certificate issued by the Municipal Corporation
  • Policy Bond issued by the Public Life Insurance Corporations/Companies having the DOB of the holder of the insurance policy

Documents required for minors fresh passport

  • Parents original and self-attested copies of the passport should be carried
  • Proof of current address in the parent’s name
  • Photo passbook of running bank account in any public sector bank, private sector bank and regional rural banks
  • Birth certificate
  • Policy Bond issued by the Public Life Insurance Corporations/Companies having the DOB of the holder of the insurance policy
  • Aadhaar card or e-Aadhaar
  • PAN Card
  • School leaving certificate/ Secondary school leaving certificate
  • School or university 10th standard mark’s card
