Here are some tips from dialysis patients we have collected:

  • Use tiny glasses: like glasses of juice, at food. Don’t fill them up completely if you are using bigger glasses.
  • Limit your intake of salt: Your body is holding on to water by salt. Salt restrictions help your thirst to regulate.
  • Maintain hard candy, such as mints, citrus fruits, or sour balls. Your mouth is lubricated and hunger is reduced.
  • Take sips, not gulps: Try to taste some liquids, and don’t just give them a thirsty quencher.
  • Divide the fluid into portions that can be handled. You could drink eight ounces at 4 separate times a day, at 10:00, 14:00, 18:00, and 24:00, for example, if 32 ounces a day are available.
  • You should reduce your consumption earlier in the day when you plan on attending a social function in the evening to enjoy a drink at the event.
  • Use a calming mouthwash every day and clean your language, since good mouth hygiene also helps to get rid of the feeling of a “dry mouth.”
  • If you are onĀ hemodialysis, set your goal to gain no more than 2-4 pounds between treatments, or 1-2 pounds per day (or the goal established by your dietitian). Two cups of liquid equal one pound of fluid gain.
